Student fundraising

Every spring and fall, Ashinaga college and university scholarship recipients organize fundraising activities at over 500 train stations and other sites across Japan, comprising one of the biggest fundraising efforts in the country. When these campaigns began in 1970, donations were designated solely for children who had lost parents in traffic accidents. Over the years, support was extended to orphans of other accidents, illness, natural disasters such as the Hanshin Earthquake, and suicide. Over 40 years, Ashinaga fundraising activities have yielded some 80 billion Japanese yen (US$850 million) in donations, and helped more than 80,000 orphaned children obtain the education they may otherwise not have received.
