Sir Eric was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bristol from 2001 to 2015, Chair of the Worldwide University Network from 2003 to 2007, and President of Universities UK (representing all UK universities) from 2011 to 2013.
He graduated in Medicine from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1976 and is a fully trained Gynaecologist who specialized in reproductive medicine and endometriosis. He was Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Southampton from 1991 -2001 and Head of the School of Medicine and then Dean from 1995 – 2000. He currently combines a portfolio of charity trustee roles with running a busy consulting company in higher education. He is married with two children and recently became a grandfather. His brother, Damian, has lived and worked in Japan for 40 years so he has visited many times. He received a Knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in 2013 for services to higher education.
