Senior Advisor of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Director, Center for Science Information Analysis Former President of Keio University

Yuichiro Anzai is Senior Advisor and former President of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Japan’s representative government-supported research funding agency, and also serves as the chair of the governing board of the Global Research Council: the world-wide organization of research funding agencies. He also is a member of the Council for Science and Technology, the chair of the governmental strategic committee for artificial intelligence technology, the team leader of the governmental project for the innovation of university and high-school education, and the chair of the National Commission for UNESCO. From 2001 to 2009, Dr. Anzai was President of Keio University. Prior to that, he was Dean of the School of Science Technology (1993-2001) and Professor of Computer Science (starting in 1988) at Keio. He also served as the chair of the Central Council for Education, and President of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities. After receiving his PhD from Keio in 1974, Dr. Anzai was a postdoctoral research fellow (1976- 1978), and visiting assistant professor (1981-1982) at Carnegie Mellon University. Since that time he has been engaged in research on human and machine learning in cognitive and computer sciences, and has published around 300 reviewed articles and books in such areas as cognitive science, computer science, neuroscience, and robotics. In 2015, Dr. Anzai was honored to be a Person of Cultural Merit.
