Over 110,000 Scholars Supported
Since 1969, Ashinaga has provided financial support and emotional care to young people around the world who have lost either one or both parents. Our support has enabled more than 110,000 orphaned students to gain access to higher education.
From 2001, we expanded our activities internationally, with our first office abroad in Uganda. Since then, we have established offices in Senegal, the USA, Brazil, the UK, and France to support the Ashinaga Africa Initiative.
Every year, more and more students around Japan are applying to receive scholarships. In 2019, the number of Ashinaga Scholars reached an all-time high at 6,551 students that year. Japan’s government has since expanded initiatives to increase access to university for all, regardless of their income level, but still, education remains out of reach for many who are in difficult home situations. As reported at the end of 2020, the Ashinaga Africa Initiative has supported 162 Scholars and counting.
