In 1970, the students who initially began fund-raising invited other students to participate in the campaign. Although only 36 students participated in the first fund-raising campaign, now ASHINAGA student body organizes the fund-raising campaign twice a year across the country mobilizing about 10,000 students at over 500 venues.
They raise about USD 1 million each time.
These activities have become very well known in Japan. There are many ways to make donations, such as through the Internet, at banks, or sending personal checks. However, the face-to-face contact with the public while raising money on the streets is also very important.
