Urgent Press Release / December 13 2006
Dec. 21: Exhibition of "The Drawings of the Orphans from 16 Countries"
¡ÁDec. 20: Publication of "The Dreams of 100 World Orphans"¡Á
¡¡ ASHINAGA is the organization in Japan for helping orphans. For the last 40 years, we have been providing scholarships and emotional support to children who have lost one or both parents. Until now, about 70000 orphans received our scholarship to go to high schools and universities. In addition, as part of our emotional support activities, orphaned children by the Great Hanshin Earthquake have been holding the International Summer Camp for Orphans since 2000, in return for the kindness they received from 150 countries after the earthquake.
¡¡ This summer, we invited 100 children from 16 countries who have lost a parent(s) for various reasons, such as the Indian Ocean Tsunami (Banda Aceh, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia and Maldives), the 9-11 Terrorist Attacks in New York, bombing on Afghanistan, the Hurricane Katrina, AIDS in Uganda and others (Jogjakarta, Pakistan, Colombia, Taiwan, Turkey, India, Algeria, Iran and Niger), and we held a summer camp with 1000 Japanese orphaned high school and college students. In spite of the differences in culture and language, they all shared their sorrow and gained hope for their future.
¡áPublication of "The Dreams of 100 World Orphans" from Iwanami Junior Shinsho on Dec. 20, 2006¡á
¡¡ The book consists of the essays on dreams written by 100 children who participated in this past summer camp. We hope that not only students in Japan but also children in many other countries will have a chance to read the book and think about orphans around the world. The book will be distributed to middle and high schools across the country.
¡¡ With that, we will hold an exhibition of the children's drawings from the book and pictures from the summer camp at the Gallery Hibiya from December 21 to the 26th, 11am to 7pm everyday.
¡¡ We are aware that it is in the middle of holiday season; however, please give us a hand to help orphans around the world!
