THE IMPACT

For more than 55 years, Ashinaga has been supporting students who have lost either one or both parents in Japan. Since 2002, Ashinaga’s activities expanded overseas, with the establishment of our first international office in Uganda. According to a UNICEF/UNAIDS report, sub-Saharan Africa has the highest proportion of orphaned children anywhere in the world, with over one in 10 young people having lost one or both of their parents. Without adequate support, these children are far less likely to finish school, and are more vulnerable to the challenges and dangers in their societies.

Through the Ashinaga Africa Initiative (AAI), we aim to empower young talented African students, with the potential to become change-makers. Ashinaga considers higher education as the key to developing future leaders. We provide all the necessary support AAI Scholars need to access top institutions around the world. We expect this to help them identify issues, find adequate solutions, and acquire the skills they need to successfully implement them. We have built comprehensive monitoring and evaluation systems to identify the impact of the program.
