Support Young Leaders Like Apollo – Join the Little by Little Campaign!
Apollo’s journey demonstrates the transformative power of the Ashinaga Africa Initiative (AAI) leadership program. As a student at the International Christian University in Japan, he has not only pursued his academic goals but has also emerged as a changemaker, driven by the values and skills nurtured through AAI.
His university experience began during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period of uncertainty that tested his resilience. Taking online classes from Uganda meant dealing with time zone differences, unreliable internet, and frequent power outages. Despite these challenges, AAI’s leadership program offered him a crucial support system, equipping him with the perseverance and problem-solving skills to overcome obstacles. The program’s focus on adaptability, purpose-driven leadership, and professional development helped Apollo stay focused on his long-term goals, even in the face of adversity. AAI’s network of Scholars and Graduates played an important role in keeping him connected, offering mentorship, advice, and a sense of community.
Before even arriving in Japan, Apollo was already dedicated to making an impact. Inspired by the leadership training he received through AAI, he took the initiative to lead the Nansana Cleaning Club, an environmental youth project in his hometown. By partnering with local councils and NGOs, the club introduced a household trash collection service that addressed environmental issues and created job opportunities for local youth. His dedication to change earned him recognition as one of Africa’s “25 Under 25” Young Leaders Changing the Game.
When he joined university in Japan, Apollo’s leadership journey accelerated. Motivated by the global perspective gained through AAI, he represented youth voices at the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, advocating for greater youth inclusion in decision-making. Later, at the Youth Democracy Forum in Athens, he passionately stated that young people don’t just want their voices heard—they want to lead action and drive meaningful change.
The leadership training and mentorship from AAI fueled Apollo’s vision of empowering young changemakers. He founded Signals from the Grassroots, a global youth-led NGO that connects and equips young people with the tools to create meaningful change. Today, the organization boasts over 4,000 members across 54 countries, amplifying youth voices and fostering sustainable development. Apollo also drew on the support of fellow AAI Scholars, many of whom joined his initiative, providing invaluable assistance in making the project a success.
Apollo’s journey illustrates how leadership, nurtured by the right guidance and support, can create a ripple effect of change. You can help us continue empowering young leaders like Apollo by supporting the Ashinaga Africa Initiative during the Little by Little campaign.
